Overview – TVGuardian is a special DVD player that plays any regular DVD gives you the ability to selectively filter out profanity.
How Does it Work – TV Guardian makes use of the closed-captioning that is available on most DVDs. By reading the closed-captioning the DVD player detects offensive language. If offensive language is detected the sound is muted, the offensive word is replaced in the closed captioning, and the closed captioning is dispayed. DVDs from Universal Studio do not have closed captioning so the TVGuardian filtering will not work with these DVDs.
Filter Settings – TVGuardian has 7 different Filter settings that you can choose from. The settings are:
- Off
- Tolerant
- Moderate
- Strict
- Damn and Hell
- Religious
- Sexual References
How Many Movie Titles Does TVGuardian Support – TVGuardian will work with all DVDs that provide closed-cationing. Note: Universal Studio DVDs do not have closed captioning.
Bottom Line - If you are only concerned about filtering out offensive language TVGuardian is a good choice. ClearPlay also filters scenes, but requires a membership subscription to download new filters (see ClearPlay review) that comes at an extra cost. For most people though, ClearPlay is probably a better choice.
